The Lyman Reed Blake method of construction.

At SLF, we take pride in our use of the renowned Blake Stitch Method to craft footwear of unparalleled quality for the discerning gentleman. Developed by the pioneering Lyman Reed Blake, this method involves the seamless sewing of the sole (outsole) directly to the sockliner (insole), resulting in a level of flexibility and lightness unparalleled in the industry. Each model is meticulously crafted by hand, with attention given to the type of leather and the careful selection of the finest hides that naturally mold to the wearer's feet, before being expertly finished by our skilled artisans with years of experience.
Our footwear stands out from the crowd with its delicately nuanced shifts in color tones, masterfully blended with our exclusive patinated finishes, imbuing the shoes with balance and a truly unique style. Our premium leathers harmonize with the colors, bestowing the shoes with a remarkable transparency and depth. The footwear exudes vitality and character, with each patina being one-of-a-kind and a testament to the virtuosity of our master colorists.
The Blake method is the cornerstone of our shoemaking process, developed by Lyman Reed Blake in 1856, who invented the machine that made it possible and later sold it to Gordon McKay. It is a simple yet ingenious process that involves the direct stitching of the sole to the upper of the shoe, bypassing the need for an intermediate layer connecting the pre-milled sole to the upper of the shoe. Our 7mm leather soles, which are both glued and sewn to the upper, provide unmatched construction ease, sole flexibility, and the sleek modernity that our Italian peers are renowned for.
It should be noted that, while our leather soles are less waterproof due to the stitching made with high-strength braided cotton and polyester cords, we pride ourselves on the high-quality materials we use in our production process, sourcing them from internationally certified tanneries and using proven origins of ox leather for the soles, and other exotic animal leathers, and Box Cow for our uppers. The result is a shoe that is not only of outstanding quality but also one of the best in the world, produced with a proven construction method and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
